Metal detecting is not just about finding "Treasure" you also have the pleasure of making new friends that have the same interest, learning about our ancestors, where they perhaps would have settled, where their water supply would have come from, perhaps a nearby river or natural spring, understanding that the land they would have farmed would (in most cases) be on a south facing hill, learning that sometimes the names of some farms would have identified with perhaps the immediate area long ago, e.g. Bury Farm (possibly ancient burials nearby) Home farm (maybe a Roman/saxon/medieval settlement) look for Churches in the area and try to find out the date it was built, these small but important pieces of information that most people overlook can give you a good indication of what maybe found if you do your research of the area.   The internet is a wonderful way of finding out this kind of information, there are various sites you can search, I personally use "Digital Documents" you do have to pay for the privilege but it has just about every piece of information you will need on practically every area in the UK.  www.digital-documents.co.uk
